London leads the pack of the “2019 World’s Best Cities,” a ranking of the 100 best-performing cities around the globe by Resonance Consultancy. The top cities were unveiled Nov. 7 at City Nation Place in London and online at BestCities.org.

Resonance, which specializes in tourism, real estate, and economic development for countries, cities, and communities, deemed London’s world-class culture, shopping, and food scene, along with a record-breaking 19.8 million visitors in 2017 and the drop in the value of the pound, as some of the reasons why London topped the list.

The consultancy group bases the list on its own methodology that uses the opinions of visitors, investors, talent, and residents. Findings were based on an evaluation of 100 of the world’s top-performing cities, based on 24 factors, including quality of the environment, quality of institutions, housing affordability and employment opportunities, diversity, economic prosperity, and quality of culture.

The ranking analyzes and compares these factors in six key categories — promotion, place, product, prosperity, people, and programming — using a combination of core statistics and online ratings and reviews, from TripAdvisor reviews, Facebook check-ins, Google searches and Google Trends.

The product category is of special interest to the business events industry as it includes a city’s key institutions, attractions, and infrastructure including the subcategories of airport connectivity, convention center, attractions and museums, and university rankings.

High rankings in the product category helped push Paris into the No. 2 position, Moscow into the No. 6 position, and Chicago into the No. 7 spot. In its report, Resonance spotlighted Frankfurt’s convention centers and connectivity for pushing it to the No. 5 spot in the category, and the No. 25 spot overall.

“Frankfurt am Main rises above them all with its first-place global ranking for its convention centers, which attract more than 4.5 million conventioneers per year,” the report reads, adding later that Frankfurt earned a second place in the airport connectivity ranking. “Frankfurt has perfected the art of air access. Germany is in the middle of Europe, Frankfurt is in the middle of Germany, and its airport — the largest in the country — is one of the world’s aviation hubs.”
