This year, PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties program honors exceptional young leaders in the business events industry. Class of 2024 member Sofia Niebles Evilla, Tourism Cluster Professional at the Chamber of Commerce of Barranquilla, Colombia, shares the best piece of advice she has received — and how it helps her enjoy her work life in the events and travel industries.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve gotten?
From my dad — the importance of enjoying your work and being passionate about what you do. This guidance goes beyond merely completing job tasks; it involves finding meaning and satisfaction in each workday.
Enjoying work not only enhances the quality of work life but also positively impacts productivity and creativity. When we are passionate about our responsibilities, we are more likely to approach challenges with enthusiasm and seek innovative solutions. Furthermore, job satisfaction is linked to higher levels of engagement and long-term professional success. By incorporating happiness into our work life, we not only improve our overall wellbeing but also contribute to a fulfilling and satisfying life.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I envision myself playing a pivotal role in advancing Barranquilla’s position as an event destination. I am enthusiastic about leading initiatives that further enhance the city’s appeal, drawing in a diverse range of global events and business activities. I aspire to be at the forefront of innovative strategies, leveraging my expertise in tourism to create unique and memorable experiences for both local and international audiences.
What do you like most about your job?
I am deeply passionate about tourism, driven by my love for travel and a profound connection to my city. I have the platform to empower local entrepreneurs by sharing industry trends supported by international data and studies. This allows me to illustrate the vast economic and social potential that business events can bring to our community.
