When planners of the South Carolina Pest Pro Summit wanted a pub crawl to wrap up their event, the convention center team stepped in to help. They mapped out the entire route, including locations near the convention center and the host hotel. In lieu of a traditional pub crawl, Experience Columbia SC Sports planned a “sports crawl” for attendees when they hosted the US Sports Congress at the convention center in December 2019. Attendees formed teams and competed in axe throwing, virtual golf and bowling at the respective locations around town.
During a conference for music educators, the convention center team installed sheet music window clings and invited attendees to guess which song it was on social media—translating in-person experiences to the online world. For a conference of math teachers, they challenged the attendees to solve complex math problems set at the bottom of the convention center’s escalator and revealed the answer at the top. Literary quote decals on bathroom mirrors are in the works for a soon-to-arrive group of librarians.
Other personalized details this group of local experts have offered planners include geotagged Snapchat filters and clever wayfinding. They put paw prints on the floors for the Association of Zoos & Aquariums annual conference—along with a remote-controlled shark balloon that they flew around the tradeshow floor during the event.
