Join Us for Service in Sync and Help Homeless Pets

GMC Community Services Committee

The GMC PCMA Community Service Committee invites you to participate in Service in Sync on Friday, November 8th from 10:30am-12:30pm.  This year we will volunteer at PAWS Chicago.  PAWS Chicago was founded to end the unnecessary killing of homeless pets by informing and engaging the public and the media to help bring about change.   The mission of PAWS Chicago is to build no-kill communities – starting with a no-kill Chicago – that respect and value the life of every cat and dog.  PAWS Chicago also strives to end the overpopulation of homeless animals through solutions, practices and education.  Through community outreach, PAWS Chicago continues to transform animal welfare by setting higher standards in the way animals are treated and developing a sustainable, solutions-based model.

How many individuals can volunteer?  A maximum of 15 individuals at a time. (The Center can work with 20 people if folks will be flexible about assignments.) A minimum of 10 is recommended.

Where do we volunteer?   At the PAWS Chicago Adoption Center located at 1997 N. Clybourn Avenue (west Lincoln Park neighborhood).   The center is a 13,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the adoption of Chicago's homeless animals.  It is cage-free and is the only cage-free facility in the Midwest.  Daily, there are between 35-50 dogs in the 25 dog rooms and 50-70 cats in the 10 cat rooms. Since the Center opened in September 2007, over 15,000 dogs and cats have found forever homes.

What can we expect from the Volunteer Experience?  Volunteers begin with a brief orientation to PAWS Chicago, a discussion of PAWS’ Mission, and a tour of the Adoption Center. Visiting volunteers usually work on administrative projects (assembling adoption folders or information packets, putting together cones needed for spay/neuter surgeries, etc.) or light cleaning duties (folding laundry, cleaning windows or doing dishes). You can socialize with a few of the homeless dogs and cats after your hard work!

What should we wear?  Because you will have animal contact you must wear the following for practical reasons and safety purposes:

- All clothing should be washable.

- Rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes/sneakers (a MUST; inappropriate footwear=no animal contact).

- Long pants.

- Long-sleeved shirts (requested, not required).

- Avoid wearing perfume/cologne as some pets react negatively to new odors, and avoid wearing dangling jewelry.

 - You also get to wear a PAWS Chicago volunteer apron and name tag.

Parking/Transportation:  During the day street parking is typically available, particularly on the side streets (just pay close attention to the signs).  Do NOT park in the strip mall across from the Center -- there is a very diligent towing service.  In the evenings (starting at 5 pm) the Center has free use of the Anixter Center's parking lot, which is about a block away.  Public transportation is a viable option.   It takes seven minutes to walk from the Armitage stop of the CTA's Brown Line, and the #73 Armitage bus (CTA) stops at the el station and PAWS’ corner.  The Center is also a doable walk to/from the Metra's Clybourn station and the CTA Red Line North/Clybourn stop.

Anything else?  Each volunteer is required to sign a waiver of liability. PAWS asks that each volunteer read and sign the waiver prior to coming to the Center. Please bring the signed waiver with you as it will be collected at the beginning of the event.  If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Kris Marinelli at kmarinelli@mgmresorts.com.   A waiver will be sent to you.

If you are unable to volunteer on November 8th but would still like to participate, a “wish list” of items to donate is listed on the PAWS website: http://www.pawschicago.org/support-paws-chicago/wish-list/.  We will collect any “wish list” items at the PCMA Bowlathon on November 6th

Thank you for your consideration to volunteer with us at PAWS Chicago!  Any questions, please contact Kris Marinelli at
